The Japanese major program was founded in 1972, with the MA program for Japanese Language and Literature receiving approval in 2000. The Department of Japanese Language and Literature was established in 2004 and went on to be recognized as a “Distinctive Major Program” in Fujian Province in 2008. The Department began to enroll Doctoral students in 2013 and was selected for development as a national first-class undergraduate major in 2021. At present, the department has a full-time faculty of 14, including 1 professor (one doctoral supervisor), 8 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 2 chair professors, and 2 foreign teachers. In 2008, it was recognized as a specialty program of Fujian Province. The department offers “3+1” undergraduate education programs in partnership with the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), the University of Tsukuba (UoT), Hokkaido University, among others. The professional competence of its students is widely recognized by society.
