The Department of European Language and Literature has three specializations: Russian, German, and Spanish.
Founded in 1952, the Russian Language and Literature major is one of the designated enrollment units among the 26 such units nationwide. In 2020, it was selected for development as a national-level first-class undergraduate major. At present, it has a full-time faculty of 7, including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors. It aims to cultivate versatile talents proficient in the Russian language with a solid foundation in basic skills, strong overall capacity, and adaptability to the development of the market economy. The department offers a “3+1” undergraduate education program and a “2+1” graduate education program in partnership with Tver State University.
The German Language and Literature major was founded in 2006. At present, it has a full-time faculty of 8, including 1 professor (one doctoral supervisor), 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, and one foreign teacher. The major began admitting master's students in 2017 and doctoral students in 2020, with enrollment covering German literature, translation studies, linguistics, cross-cultural studies, and research on German-speaking regions and countries. Collaborative international training programs for cultivating versatile talents have been established with institutions like the Technische Universität Berlin and the University of Trier.
The Spanish Language and Literature major was established in 2016. At present, it has a full-time faculty of 5, including 1 associate professor and 4 assistant professors, and 3 foreign teachers. The major has developed a strong academic foundation in foreign literature, linguistics, and translation studies as its traditional strengths. It has also embraced a development plan with comparative literature and cross-cultural studies as emerging focal points. Its research directions encompass the literature and culture of Spain and Latin American countries.
