The French major at XMU was established in 1978, with the Master's degree program in French Language and Literature officially established in 2003. The Department of French Languages and Literature was established in 2006, and the French program at XMU was designated as a specialty program of Fujian Province in 2010. Currently, the Department of French Languages and Literature has a full-time faculty of 9, including 1 professor (one doctoral supervisor), 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, and one foreign teacher. Since 2001, the department introduced a “3+1” undergraduate educational program in partnership with Sorbonne University, Jean Moulin University Lyon 3, Paris Nanterre University, University of Franche-Comté (UFC), University of Caen Normandy, Le Havre Normandy University, among others. In 2022, the department introduced a “3+1+1” education program with the University of Western Ontario.
