2nd Forum on Chinese Modernization from Overseas Perspectives Held at XMU

From May 26 to 28, 2025, Xiamen University (XMU) successfully hosted the Second Forum on Chinese Modernization from Overseas Perspectives. The event, jointly organized by the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLC) and partner institutions, convened international scholars and subject matter experts for in-depth discussions on two pivotal themes: China and Global Modernization in the Context of 50 Years of China-EU Relations and Cultural Exchange and Modernization.

In his opening remarks, XMU President Zhang Rong underscored the practical achievements and theoretical advancements of Chinese modernization, stressing the importance of cross-cultural dialogue in fostering global understanding. Erik Solheim, former UN Under-Secretary-General, delivered a keynote address, highlighting China’s unique approach to balancing economic growth with ecological sustainability as a model for sustainable development worldwide.


The forum featured insights from prominent academics, including Professor Pino Arlacchi, another former UN Under-Secretary-General, who emphasized China’s commitment to respecting national sovereignty in its foreign policy. Professor Eberhard Sandschneider of Freie Universität Berlin advocated for strengthened China-EU cooperation grounded in mutual respect and shared goals.


Roundtable discussions addressed pressing topics such as China-EU Relations in Transition and the Transformative Power of Education and Cultural Exchange, where participants exchanged perspectives on enhancing collaboration to tackle global challenges.

A notable side event included the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Xiamen University and the EU-Asia Centre, formalizing a long-term partnership to promote civilizational exchange. The forum garnered significant media attention, with coverage from leading outlets such as CGTN and China Daily.
