On November 18, 2024, Professor Christopher Whitehead, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global at Newcastle University, visited the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLC) at Xiamen University. He was accompanied by Professor Su Yuxiao, the Academic Director of the Newcastle University Confucius Institute, and Liu Jinlong, Project Officer from Xiamen University’s International Office.

The delegation was warmly received by Professor Chen Jing, Dean of CFLC, who hosted a productive meeting. Also in attendance were Professor Liu Yue, Vice Dean of the College; Professor Lin Bin, Vice Chair of the English Department; as well as faculty and student representatives.
Dean Chen Jing extended a sincere welcome to Pro-Vice-Chancellor Whitehead, highlighting the long-standing academic exchanges between the two institutions and expressing strong optimism for future collaboration.
In response, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Whitehead reaffirmed Newcastle University’s commitment to advancing language disciplines and welcomed Professor Su Yuxiao’s leadership at the Confucius Institute. He provided an overview of language studies at Newcastle and noted the strong foundation for cooperation, expressing enthusiasm for deeper academic ties.
Vice Dean Liu Yue presented CFLC’s century-long history, current developments, and internationalization achievements, while Vice Chair Lin Bin detailed the English Department’s teaching programs. The discussions explored potential dual-degree programs and other collaborative initiatives in talent cultivation.
The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening ties between the two institutions. Moving forward, CFLC will leverage its disciplinary strengths to expand cooperation with Newcastle University across language-related fields, further enhance its international education framework, and cultivate professionals dedicated to global cultural exchange.
